Services
Dr. Samuel Long began his Ophthalmology practice in 1912, making it the oldest ophthalmology practice in the Chattanooga area. Today Dr. Charles Kirby continues the tradition of quality eye care for the Tennessee Valley started by Dr. Samuel Long. Now over a century later, the Chattanooga Eye Institute is recognized as an area leader in eye care and research offering everything from cataract and refractive surgery, to eyelid surgery, to clinical trials, to glasses and contact lenses. Our mission is to provide excellence in ophthalmology through caring, competence, and cooperation.
A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes thick and cloudy, making it difficult for light to pass through easily, and causing hazy or blurred vision. The amount and pattern of cloudiness within the lens varies from patient to patient. If the cloudiness is not in the center of the lens, and is only around the edges, you may be unaware you have a cataract.
Dr. Levy specializes in numerous eyelid and orbit disorders and provides medical and surgical treatment for both. Dr. Levy is a fellowship trained oculoplastic surgeon with special interest involving Moh's reconstruction, thyroid eye disease, eyelid malposition, and pseudotumor cerebri. He also provides cosmetic treatments providing a natural, youthful restoration to the eyelids and face.
There are many misconceptions about cataracts. A cataract is not: a film over the eye, caused by over-using the eyes, a cancer spread from one eye to the other, or a cause of irreversible blindness. Cataracts are most frequently caused by the aging of the natural lens of the eye, and are a common cause of poor vision among the elderly.

Dr Levy is the best! He explained the procedure thoroughly and in layman's terms so I understood all the risks and benefits. I would definitely recommend him to anybody.

I had an extremely wonderful and professional experience. Dr Levy is the best eye doctor in Chattanooga. This was the first time I've had an ophthalmologist spend time with me and explain my eye exam results. It's obvious he cares about his patients. And thanks to the staff for not making me wait in the reception area for more than 5 minutes.

2 hours after my appointment time I still had not seen a doctor. Front desk didn't care so I left. Truly not a patient friendly group.

I saw Dr. Levy yesterday and I was a first time patient. The staff was very kind and I'm not used to getting my eyes checked or trust doctors much but the staff was so friendly and professional. The computer systems where down and I didn't mind the wait just wish I was told to let someone drive me to the appointment becasue I had my eyes dialated but a girl like me keeps shades in the car and I was just fine. Hopefully I can get my prescription for my glasses a little tight on money but my vision is important to me. The nice guy in the eyeglass store was professional and explained pricing and lens options that were best for me. When I get my glasses I will write another review.

Absolutely the worse experience of my life. Appointment was at 1030, I arrived early sat in the lobby until 1115. I asked the receptionist how long it would be and they sent someone out to see me. They told me it would be an hour until I could be seen. This is an completely unacceptable. I have decided to see the VA for the issue. This place is so disorganized that I am willing to use the freaking VA.

Getting PRK Surgery was the best thing I have done for myself. I would highly reccomend Chattanooga Eye Institute and Dr. Kirby. I had a good experience from the first day I entered their office. The office staff was welcoming, experienced, and kind.

The first time I went there, they managed to get my prescription right. However, that was the only time this happened. This last time, I had to go back 4 times and they're still not right. When I first got them back, the lenses were very thick unlike my previous lenses. I told them about my concerns of the difference in the thickness. They lied and told me that it is just the way the lenses have to be although I couldn't read through those lenses.

They remade them and the lenses were the right thickness this time, but I still couldn't see well through them. Well, after the 4th time, I just settled for close. My son had to go back 2 times for them to get his right and when I mentioned to the optician about me still not seeing well, she was rude to me and basically insinuated that the problem was me, not them or their lab. I'm not happy with my experience at Chattanooga eye Institute, but am at a loss of where to go.

I had PRK surgery on Nov 2, 2016 at the Chattanooga Eye Institute. I already had so much to be thankful for in my life, Dr. Kirby and his staff added so much more. My visual acuity has improved so much, details that I have not seen for over 10 years are crystal clear and colors seem to be more vivid and richer. As a graphic designer, web developer, and claims processor, the surgery has proved to be priceless. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Kirby and his professional and friendly staff.

It is time for Dr. Charles Kirby to Retire. He doesn't stay consistent with his patients. He would say one thing then turn around and say something totally different. He is never forth coming to his patients when asked a straight forward question, he has the patients guess, never answer it, or patient has give him the answer to their own questions.

He thinks after a few months of not allowing a staff member near this patient or that patient at patients request, it is ok to have that staff member near the patient/s. I now believe, on behalf of a patient, that he is now incompetent of his duties as an Eye Doctor/Surgeon.
