Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a combined surgical procedure to decompress spinal nerves and stabilize the cervical spine. This surgery is performed to relieve pain, numbness and weakness in the neck and upper back and to provide stability in this portion of the spine. As the name indicates, this procedure is performed through an incision at the front, or anterior, of one side of the neck. With this surgical approach, the disc can be accessed without disturbing the spinal cord, the neck muscles and uninvolved spinal nerves.
Posterior lumbar fusion, also known as arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure performed to join two or more of the lumbar vertebrae (the small bones of the lower back) into one solid bone. This operation is designed to stop mechanical pain, the pain associated with the movement of the affected bones that results in inflammation of the discs and joints.

A friend referred me to Dr. Ira Chernoff. My initial exam was on April 16, 2021. Dr. Chernoff recommended a laminectomy and decompression at both levels. He took the time to completely explain the process to me along with risks and complications that can happen. The surgery was performed on May 4, 2021 at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. Today is May 17, 2021 and I have no numbness or pain in my legs and feet.

Thanks to Dr. Ira Chernoff, my life is better today than it was on May 3, 2021. I can walk and stand pain free. Dr. Chernoff is a dedicated, compassionate doctor who truly cares about his patients. I would highly recommend him to my family and friends who need back surgery. In addition to Dr. Ira Chernoff, I would also like to thank Cecilia Capozzoli PA-C and Anne McGrath ANP.

Not only did I see Cecilia in the office prior to surgery, but also in the operating room as well. It was good to see another familiar face in the OR. Both are dedicated professionals who are caring and friendly. Finally, the office staff are wonderful. They are all friendly and helpful on the phone and in person.

I have seen both Dr. Marc and Dr. Ira, they are both very knowledgeable, and show much compassion. The PA and Nurse Practitioner are the best, and the office staff are helpful and courteous. I would recommend them to the fullest.

I seen Doctor Chernoff for a second opinion, after I was told that I would need spinal fusion, for my current condition, as I was suffering from pain in my lower leg/ankle area. Prior to meeting with Dr. Chernoff, I tried six weeks of physical therapy, epidural injections, and prescribed rest, all with no success. I reached out to Doctor Chernoff after leaving a doctor appointment as previously mentioned, wherein I was told that I would need spinal Fusion.

Doctor Chernoff's staff was able to see me two days later, and the rest is history as they say. For myself, it was the smartest decision that I have made, as Doctor Chernoff and his staff worked with me for nearly three hours, setting up an new MRI (to get a better picture) in the next building over, having me return with the results, extensive X-rays in his office, all to get to the bottom of what has been plaguing me for over three months.

After reviewing the new data, Dr. Chernoff had a more conservative approach, as he explained to me that fusion alone would probably not cure my symptoms, suggesting a Lumbar Laminectomy, thus to relieve pressure from my spinal cord, which presented itself as pain in my lower leg. Spinal Fusion was also a slim possibility, as Doctor Chernoff would only commit to the Spinal Fusion after he opened me up and felt around, instead of basing on just an MRI alone.

Doctor Chernoff stayed the course, after meeting with me the day before the surgery, and the day of, he answered all my questions and would not waver, he would not commit to Spinal Fusion unless it was needed. After my surgery, I was stunned to learn that Doctor Chernoff decided to fuse my spine in addition to performing the Lumbar Laminectomy, he was just so against it (Spinal Fusion), but he determined that I needed it.

As a patient, what more could I or anyone ask for, a conservative honest approach. Less than three weeks removed from surgery, I am on the mend, no leg pain whatsoever, and the symptoms from the Spinal Fusion are getting better each day. I could not be more grateful to Doctor Ira Chernoff, Doctor Marc Chernoff, and the their entire staff for helping me.

I went to Dr. Ira Chernoff for a second opinion after seeing a neurosurgeon. Wonderful experience from start to finish! Physicians and staff professional and caring. Most complete orthopedic examination and consult I ever had. Answered all questions and then some! Highly recommended. Thank you Dr. Chernoff!

I had a problem with herniated disc and came to see Dr Ira Chernoff and was very disappointed. Before even looking at my MRI results his assistant told me that I will most likely need a surgery. During my second visit the doctor kept "suggesting" surgery and the next morning someone from his office called me and booked me for the surgery although I told them that i need some time to think about it.

Doctor advised that physical therapy might aggravate it. I did my own research and found out that the majority of herniated discs do not require surgery. Needless to say I never came back to see the doctor again.

My husband and now myself have seen both doctors, they were more than professional, and thorough. They were NOT inappropriate in any way! They saved my husband twice and wouldn't be going now for myself if I didn't trust them! Great docs!

Chernoff and his brother coupled with Dr Keuskamp completely destroyed my back. They placed a bone growth stimulator in my back which they never took out because I lost my insurance. Do not go there. I had to have 2 more surgeries on my lower back.
