A cataract is the general term given to the clouding or loss of clarity of the natural lens inside your eye. A cataract can develop in one or both eyes. This can be a result of aging, trauma, or related to certain diseases or medications. Surgery is the only method to correct a cataract once it is affecting your vision.
A corneal transplant involves having surgery to replace your cornea with a cornea that has been donated by someone who died. The cornea you will receive is referred to as the donor cornea, and it will be provided by a licensed and certified eye bank. Because the cornea does not have a direct blood supply, you do not have to be matched to your donor.
Glaucoma is a disease that damages your eye's optic nerve. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. It is estimated that three million Americans have glaucoma, but only about half of them know that they have glaucoma.
Patients with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing eye conditions because a high blood sugar level can damage blood vessels in the eye. Over 40 percent of patients diagnosed with diabetes develop some form of eye disease as a result. These conditions can cause blood or fluid to leak from the retina or new blood vessels to grow on the surface of the retina which can lead to significant damages to your vision and overall quality of life.

I had the great pleasure of having Nurse Mary and she was AMAZING! She explained every single exam to me, which put me at ease prior to being seen by the doctor. The experience was amazing and Dr. Barry Herst was also super knowledgeable and kind. I would highly recommend Eye Physicians & Surgeons of Chicago to all those that are seeking an Ophthalmologists in the Lakeview/LP area.

The staff is very professional and friendly. I had 2 cataract surgeries performed by Dr. Barry Herst. There was no pain or discomfort. I am 68 years old and do not remember my sight ever having been this good. Who would ever think cataract surgery would be a good or pleasant experience? Dr. Herst and his staff made it so. Bravo!
