There were complications using the old fashioned techniques, which required general anesthesia and used huge instruments cannulas to remove the fat. The technique was improved by French surgeons, then introduced to the US in the late 1970's. In 1987, a US Dermatologic Cosmetic surgeon developed the Tumescent Technique, which eliminates the risks, prolonged discomfort, hospitalization, and expense resulting from the outdated huge cannulas and general anesthetic.
