The Medical Society of DC was founded in 1817 by a group of physicians concerned about the growth of "quackery" in the city. Since then, organized medicine has been an indelible part of the District, not just in improving health but in growing the economy, providing jobs, and helping grow the cultural scene.

Robert Hay began his association career lobbying for animal doctors, and continues it today advocating for human ones. He is a native Washingtonian, born at Providence Hospital and raised in Ward 7 before his parents moved to Prince George's County, MD. Among other activities, Hay is an Alumni Governor of the Catholic University of America and volunteer coach for his children's sports teams.
