Pacific EyeCare, Kitsap and Jefferson Counties' premier Ophthalmic and Optometric practice, is also one of the oldest. Dr. Tom Case hung up his Ophthalmology shingle in the early 70's and helped establish the North Kitsap Medical Center. He was one of only three Ophthalmologists serving Kitsap and Jefferson Counties. The practice pioneered state of the art improvements in cataract, retinal and glaucoma treatments and surgeries. During the late 80's the doctors at Pacific EyeCare established the Pacific Surgery Center, which was the first outpatient surgery center west of Seattle.
A cataract is a cloudiness that develops in the normally clear lens of the eye. The lens, about the size of an aspirin, is the transparent fine focusing part of the eye located behind the pupil. It is comprised of a strong, transparent outer covering or capsule filled with a clear gel material. As the cataract develops, vision is increasingly reduced. Cataracts are usually discovered during the course of routine eye exams. If you have cataracts that are causing visual difficulties, your doctor will usually recommend surgery, the only known cure for cataracts.
Glaucoma is a specific pattern of diseases that damage the optic nerve, which carries the images we see to the brain. For many people, surgery may be the best treatment for their glaucoma. There are several different types of surgery for glaucoma. The kind of surgery that is right for you will be determined by you and your doctor after considering a number of factors, including the type and severity of glaucoma, overall health, and other eye conditions. The laser can be used when treating glaucoma.
