A retina specialist is a medical doctor who has completed his or her training in eye surgery and disease. This includes a residency and fellowship specific to retinal disease.
To begin diagnosing your vision problems, a thorough medical and ocular history will be taken. Your vision will be checked, and then your eyes will be dilated with eye drops. These drops dilate the pupil so that the doctor can see to the back of the eye. Dilation typically lasts three to four hours.
