In September 2005, a group of practicing physicians in Hawaii united under the banner of Hawaii Physician Group HPG to establish the state's 1st-ever physician-owned hospitals. In January 2007, HPG together with Cardiovascular Hospitals of America CHA, a leading U.S. hospital management firm, founded the new Hawaii Medical Center with two hospital campuses on Oahu - HMC West in Ewa Beach and HMC East in Liliha.
