My grandmother was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer. She was 84 years old and had become frail quickly after diagnosis. Her family brought her to the Cancer Center hoping to find support, compassion and prudent treatment options. After thousands of dollars of testing to stage the advanced cancer she was offered chemotherapy in hopes of slowing the disease but not curative. Once my grandmother decided to do supportive care only, and not chemo, she was dumped by the practice with no further instructions.
Her doctor was a 40 minute drive away. The Cancer Center did not even help my family coordinate Hospice care. As a Physician Assistant with 15 years in practice and a spouse who is an Internal Medicine physician, we were very unhappy with her treatment. Unfortunately, it appears as though my grandmother was treated as a potential money maker for the practice and once there was not money to be made my family was dumped, scared and without further guidance. Very disappointing for the Greater Grand Forks area.
