Allergy is a sensitivity some individuals develop to substances which are ordinarily harmless to most people. When the allergic person comes into contact with something to which he or she is sensitive, symptoms develop. Symptoms vary greatly. Common ones are sneezing, rash, itching and wheezing. Substances to which the allergic individual may become sensitized are called allergens.

Asthma is an inflammatory lung disease. The inflammation causes the airways in your lungs to become sensitive and narrow when triggered by factors such as cold air, exercise, infection or allergens. People with asthma have episodes of breathing problems in which the airways become blocked and breathing becomes difficult, with wheezing or cough.

If you have allergic rhinitis, your immune system mistakenly identifies a typically harmless substance as an intruder. This substance is called an allergen. The immune system responds to the allergen by releasing histamine and chemicals that typically cause symptoms in the nose, throat, eyes, ears, skin and roof of the mouth.

If you have a food allergy, your immune system overreacts to a particular protein found in that food. Symptoms may occur when coming in contact with just a tiny amount of the food. Food allergies are usually diagnosed in childhood, though they may also develop in older children and adults. While many children outgrow a food allergy, it is also possible for adults to develop allergies to particular foods.
